First-Time Canoeing and Kayaking with Kids: 10 Safety Tips for Smooth Sailing

Your first family paddling adventure is such an exciting milestone — and a little bit of nervousness is totally normal!
With a few simple safety tips (and a lot of snacks), you’ll set yourself up for a smooth-sailing, memory-making day out on the water.
This article is part of our Family Paddling Guide, where we share beginner-friendly tips, easy destination ideas, and all the encouragement you need to start your family’s paddling adventures with confidence.
Ready to dip your paddle in? Let’s go!
1. Always Wear a Properly Fitted Life Jacket (PFD)
Everyone — adults included — should wear a life jacket at all times.
Choosing a comfortable, well-fitted PFD is worth the extra investment — an extra $30 for a jacket you’ll actually want to wear all day is money well spent!
Kids will naturally follow your lead, so if you wear yours without complaint, they will too.
2. Check the Weather Before You Go
Before you head out, check the forecast for wind, rain, and temperature — not just sunshine.
Pro tip for Ontario families: early June can feel warm, but the water stays colder than you might expect. Sometimes Lake Ontario is colder in June than it is in October!
For your first few trips, avoid the Great Lakes unless you have formal paddling training — conditions can change quickly.
3. Choose Calm Water for Your First Trips
Sheltered lakes, quiet rivers, and conservation areas are perfect beginner paddling spots.
Choosing locations with rentals and staff available — like Kelso Conservation Area or Rockwood — can add extra peace of mind if you need advice or help before you launch.
4. Dress for the Water, Not Just the Air Temperature
Even if the day is warm, the water can chill you fast. Wear quick-dry layers (no cotton!), pack a light jacket, and always bring a full spare outfit for each paddler in a dry bag — especially for younger kids.

You don’t need a full expedition setup, but a few basics will make you feel much more confident:
- Whistle
- Bailer or sponge
- Throw rope
- Extra paddle
- Waterproof phone bag or emergency contact info
Knowing how and when to use your gear is just as important as packing it!
6. Stay Close to Shore (Especially with Young Kids)
There’s no need to cross open water when the real magic happens along the shoreline — turtles, frogs, herons, and lily pads galore!
Staying close also makes it easier to take breaks or deal with any little kid emergencies without stress.
7. Practice a “Dry Run” Before You Launch
Take a few minutes on land to let everyone sit in the boat, hold a paddle, and practice getting in and out safely.
It’s a simple trick, but it can save a lot of wobbles (and nerves) when you’re actually on the water.
8. Set Clear Rules Before You Start
Lay down a few basic rules before you launch:
- No standing up
- Stay seated unless told otherwise
- Always listen to the “captain” (you!)
Keeping it light and fun — “the more we follow the rules, the more adventures we get to have!” — helps kids feel part of the mission.
9. Know Your Family’s Limits (and Turn Back Early if Needed)
Paddling is hard work, especially for little arms.
Tired kids can go from happy to meltdown mode fast.
Keep your first outings short and celebratory — reaching the halfway point is a win, not a reason to push further.
(Pro tip: Pack twice as many snacks as you think you’ll need! My little guy used to eat more than he paddled — he would be in the snack bag before we even pushed off from shore!)
10. Tell Someone Your Plan Before You Go
Even for short paddles at local parks, let a friend or family member know where you’re going and when you expect to return.
It’s a simple step that adds a huge layer of safety and peace of mind.
